Chemical Free?

I am immediately suspicous when I see claims from other companies that their products are "chemical free". Here are some chemical facts to share with those of you who are not chemists. These are from the book "Not Just a Pretty Face, The Ugly Side of the Beauty Industry" by Stacy Malkan.

  • "Chemical" is another word for "Ingredient"
  • Everything in the world is made up of chemicals (except light and electricity).
  • There is no such thing as "chemical-free" cosmetics
  • All natural cosmetics STILL have chemicals in them!
The Ava Anderson Non-Toxic products are definitely NOT chemical-free! Their mission is to use safe chemicals that are not carcinogens, mutagens or fetal toxicants.
Many, many ingredients used in personal care products are never tested for safety. We use the Skin Deep site as a tool to look up research on specific chemicals. It is an excellent tool, but AANT has also used independent lab testing and teams of scientists to make sure we are using the safest ingredients possible!

Be VERY careful of a company that claims to be "all-natural" or "chemical-free" or "pure". I encourage everyone to do a little of their own research into these claims and look up the ingredients (chemicals) on their own.

Do not trust the label on the front of the product. Ever.
